The outline and result of the activity of the crime prevention lighting committee of IEIJ Kansai branch were introduced. Correlation between the street crime and nighttime brightness of street in Osaka were pointed out. The interest of the regional residents is indispensable with the upgrading of street lighting, to deter the occurrence of the crime on the street.

Though various illumination colors have been developed, it has to be pointed out that these colors are used without checking their effects sufficiently. The Kansai Branch of the Illuminating Engineering Institute of Japan, in cooperation with the Japan Security Systems Association, evaluated white and orange illumination colors, which are often used and have clear differences between themselves. To that end, experiments were conducted using a fluorescent lamp (for white color) and a high pressure sodium lamp (for orange color), to evaluate such vision-related items as subjective perception (e.g. a pedestrian's feeling of security), the discernment of an object color, and visual acuity. Results of the experiments show that generally, a fluorescent lamp rates higher than a sodium lamp regarding these items.
