This article provides general information about the role of materials in the optical area including illuminating engineering. In the traditional development process, the new system is firstly developed and secondly, materials suitable for the system are studied. On the other hand, liquid crystal display, laser, and other historical innovations were achieved by focusing on essential characteristics of substances, not by requirement of systems. This article outlines current state and future possibility of functionalization of materials, focusing on photonics polymer.
