The first section of this paper discusses the present and future of LED lighting in each of the following fields: general lighting, backlighting, road traffic, moving objects, signs and displays, agriculture, fishery, medical care and communication. The second section describes present activities to promote the use of LED lighting, with a focus on the activities of the Council for Promoting LED Lighting. The last section discusses future tasks for and directions of LED lighting development.
